BAY AREA HEARING SERVICES:
HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED
Bay Area Hearing Services was originally started by Gary and Marie Utley about 30 years or so ago. Gary had an office in Baytown, Texas for about 20 years then moved to Dickinson, Texas, where we are now. Gary had a very personal interest in the hearing business because his wife, Marie, and her siblings were all hearing impaired. Gary and Marie are sign language interpreters for the deaf at Clear Creek Independent School District and their church. They have been interpreting for the deaf for many years. Gary and Marie are some of the finest people you ever want to meet and Gary was instrumental in Kristen learning the business and becoming a Hearing Instrument Specialist.
Kristen started working for Gary about 6 years ago. She had actually met Gary because her two oldest boys, Matthew and Caleb, are hearing impaired. She started learning the business, was an apprentice under Gary and got her Texas license to be a Hearing Instrument Specialist in 2008. In September 2010 Gary sold the business to Kristen who is now owner and President of Bay Area Hearing Services. Her husband, Mark, acts as Vice President in charge of financing and helps her in many aspects of the business. Her mom, Brenda Boyd, helps in the office as her office assistant and answers the phone, greets the patients and does other office tasks necessary to keep things going smoothly. Brenda is also a retired legal secretary so she brings quite a bit of experience to the table. So, you might say it is a family affair.
Kristen has three boys, Matthew, Caleb and Joshua. The two oldest boys are hearing impaired. Matthew who is 16 and Caleb, 14, were born with genetic hearing losses. Matthew struggled with speech and language development until he got hearing aids when he was in the second grade and remarked that he could hear raindrops on the window for the first time. That was amazing to him. He could not believe he was hearing raindrops. Of course, by the time Caleb came along they knew what to look for so he did not have the struggles that Matthew had and he started wearing hearing aids in the first grade. Matthew is in high school now and Caleb will be next year and they both do very well with their hearing aids.
Kristen understands the day to day struggles that people who suffer with a hearing loss face because she has experienced those struggles with her children. She does not want to think about what their lives would be like without the hearing aids. She recognizes the importance of hearing aids to a person’s quality of life. We have had people come in here saying “I can hear God’s creatures now”. Not everyone realizes how hearing aids improve a person’s quality of life until they have to wear them or until they have a loved one who has to wear them.
We at Bay Area Hearing Services are committed to the same principles and standards started by Gary. This business has been a Godsend for Kristen from the very beginning and continues to be the same for all of us. We try to follow Christian principles and treat everyone who comes through our door with the same respect and compassion with which we’d like to be treated. Our goal here is not to just sell hearing aids but to be a blessing to those who walk through the door. No matter what you might need, we are
HERE TO HELP YOU HEAR.
